Police Partner with Rotary to Provide Free Active Shooter Training to Community

 

The threat of an active shooter in a populated place is on the minds of both the public and law enforcement agencies.  Active shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly.  The League City Police Department, in partnership with the Rotary Club of League City, is hosting a free training designed to prepare our community for an active shooter situation.  The event will be on Saturday, April 30, 2016 from 9-11 a.m. at the Johnnie Arolfo Civic Center in League City.

 

According to research, the average police response time to an active event is three minutes; very fast, yet often the event is already over upon arrival.  Citizen Response to Active Shooter Event (CRASE) training is designed to empower citizens to take action to save lives.  League City Police Department instructors will provide valuable information about how to recognize, assess, and make critical decisions that will prepare citizens to respond to an active shooter event.  

 

“We can’t avoid this conversation in our community.  Armed with the skills and knowledge to make the right choices for our families, coworkers, and the children in our care, we can make better decisions- decisions that save lives,” stated Lieutenant Cliff Woitena, Training and SWAT Commander.

 

While this training is not appropriate for young children, mature teenagers are welcome.  Parents are encouraged to attend and share the information in an age-appropriate way with their children.  “Rotary Club of League City supports education and safety initiatives both abroad and locally.  Sponsoring a community-wide event that empowers people to take charge of their own safety is a unique opportunity for us to serve,” stated Amy Kilgore, Rotary Club of League City President.
